Race Drivin’ on Midway Arcade Classics 3 for Xbox

www.retrogamingcollector.com —————- Gameplay from Race Drivin’ on Midway Arcade Classic 3 for the Xbox games console. Retro Gaming. This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability. It’s more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time… so it’s all a little spontaneous and random. Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly. Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn’t take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it’s entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game. However, given that these videos are intended to show that “first time experience”, I believe they have some validity or merit.

I used to like this myself when I was younger. They had a version of Hard Drivin’ for the ZX Spectrum, and as laggy and slow as it was, I still loved playing that too.

But I have to admit, on this one, the dashboard vibration and the random fart noises that sounded like the car engine backfiring (which I assume was supposed to be a skid sound) really started to get on my nerves in that “grinding your teeth” kind of way.

Either way, great vid as usual my good man!

This was the game that really turned me onto racing games even though its not a great game. There’s a PC game by the now defunct Spectrum Holobyte called “Stunt Driver” that I loved on the old DOS pc of the early 90′s. Its a lot like this.
Great video Steve. Thanks for the memories :)

This is amazing(& very funny). It’s like a funky version of Test Drive Unlimited.
Now I know where Polyphony Digital got their horrid tire squeal sound. LOL

I was wondering if you’d do a video on this one…

I played this on my compilation disc determined to make it around the stunt track three times and could barely make it around once.

I think retro is great, but when I see this I think, hmm give me Forza 3 on my Xbox360 or Gran Turismo on my PS3 over this anytime. :)

My old-school driving favourites have to be Super Sprint and Outrun in the arcades.

The only difference between Race Driving and Hard Drivin’ is RD has another track as well as the HD original (and you can choose what car you drive I think)

But that’s about it, it’s really an add-on pack rather than a sequel.

Oh I love this game! And Hard Drivin as well! A lot of gamers seem to hate them both, but I think they’re really fun! Hard Drivin’ on the SNES is great!

    lol.
I never managed to play this, or Hard Drivin on mame, and I really did try hard.
You’re right, it’s not remotely suited to a pad.

Yes it was called 4d sports driving on the amiga but juddered like a geriatric hamster, but on the PC it was called Stunts and was a lot faster on my 486 SX25…lol

@SteveBenway Lol, I can see the local newspaper headline now “Steve Benway crashed my hotrod”. To be honest, since the cold weather it’s been starting about as well as the video at 0:52!

Lets face it, this game just wasn’t meant to played with a pad – The original was almost designed around the cockpit. I used to think the fake key that you had to turn was cool. I tried to play it on mame with a keyboard once…I spent two hours trying to assign the sodding keys, and after all that I found my self in a situation where i could only go around in circles…bastard!

I’ve heard good things about 4D Sports Driving, though I’ve never played it, or even seen it.

The controls really are terrible, but it’s still oddly fun.
So… can I borrow your car?

    lol @ Drunk Drivin’.
I think I’d have driven better after a few whiskies.
I didn’t notice the dash moving while I was playing, but I can see it now when I watch the video.
The skidding is annoying… the steering’s too sensitive, and dare I say it, unrealistic.
I can’t help enjoying it though, for all its glaring flaws.

I was using the analogue stick… but it’s so “all or nothing” that I might as well have been on the D-Pad.
Oddly, I didn’t even notice the vibrating dash while I was playing it. Only when I came back, saw comments, and looked over the video did I know what you were talking about.

I think this would be much easier with the proper gear stick and clutch pedal. On a pad, it just doesn’t work.

I’d have been right there with you on Hard Drivin’. You’d never get me on a rollercoaster.
A 2nd video some time in the future is a possibility, after I’ve had some practice :)

If I’m not mistaken (which I often am) Stunt Driver and 4D Sports Driving are both related… one’s the sequel to the other, or one’s the same as the other but renamed for a different region… anyway…
At the end of the day, they were both basically copies of Race Drivin’. There was an article somewhere by the programmer, possibly in Retro Gamer. Not sure. I remember reading it though.
